Our Philosophy

Spirit of Golf is an innovative and leading-edge peak performance program geared toward golfers and other athletes who want to learn to improve their performance through the power of the Mind.

One of the most important concepts we share surrounds the powerful effect that every thought has upon our swings and the shots that unfold. To put it simply, thought and belief – energized through purposefully-directed emotion – precedes anything the body can or cannot do. When combined with the power of imagination, thought also affects how every shot appears in physical form before our very eyes.

As pioneers in the relatively new field of Conscious Athletics, our approach to improvement is refreshingly unique, as the concepts, skills and techniques we share are broader in nature than most traditional sports psychology models.

We look at the mind as a fully-integrated energy system within a body that is comprised of highly intelligent and interconnected cells – hence, the mind/body connection. By simplifying some of the latest concepts in quantum physics and brain/consciousness research, we help participants shift beyond old ways of looking at things into new paradigms through which they can tap more fully into the unfathomable potentiality and possibility of the human spirit.

To no one’s surprise, a calm, centered, focused mind has truly infinite possibilities, both on the golf course and in the course of Life. Simply stated, this is what Spirit of Golf is all about.

The Art of Tapping Into the Zone

The real shift in improving athletic performance, or for that matter any aspect of our lives, comes as we journey beyond the limitations of a fragile, reactive egoic mind.

We transcend a personality that is often on the verge of upset, anxiety or fear by learning to purposefully access an inner-directed power where we are confident, focused and alive; ready to take on the challenges of a richly rewarding and empowered life in any moment in time.

We more easily enter an altered state of consciousness known to we athletes as “The Zone,” a state of peak performance which is synonymous with our tapping into an internal Energy Flow that is always available to us and filled with infinite and unimaginable amounts of potential, possibility and power.

The Body as an Energy System

As human beings, we have fooled ourselves into believing that most of who and what we are lies in the appearance and functioning of the physical body. Nothing could be further from the truth.

Especially in golf, we spend much of our time and energy focusing on the “physicality” of the sport, trying out the latest tips and techniques at the expense of a well-trained mind. By focusing almost exclusively on the external in golf, we ignore the first and most important cause of any shot – thought, emotion and belief.

In truth, we already have an awesome and infinite power inside of us which is patiently waiting to express itself through us in every moment in time. The key is to tap into this indomitable energy and transmute its power by harnessing the potential of the Mind.

Wanted or unwanted, we create and manifest whatever we focus upon in our lives. That is why the energy system of the mind/body and the power of thought can no longer be ignored or underestimated in the field of human potentiality.

Every story we tell ourselves long enough – whether we are aware of the internal dialogue or not – eventually manifests in physical form and becomes true. The issue surrounds how aware we want to become of the stories we keep telling ourselves.

The Power of the Mind/Body

We know the average person thinks some 60,000 thoughts every day (there are only 86,400 seconds). The joke, of course, is that we think the same six thoughts about 10,000 times each. The mind cycles almost endlessly with an incessant chatter, most of it of which we are totally unaware. Thoughts fuel emotions, emotions fuel more thoughts, and before we are aware of it, we have spent years and decades of our lives in a constant looping of unconscious mind repetition.

Our brains, meanwhile, are more complicated and sophisticated than the greatest super-computer in the world, processing more than 30 billion bits of information each second. There are more than a trillion chemical reactions going on in our bodies each and every moment – each of them in direct response to the thoughts being instantaneously communicated throughout the cells.

As far as golf is concerned, each shot becomes a projection of what we are experiencing internally before we ever hit the ball. Say, for example, the mind is organized before a particular golf shot with a sort of kitchen-pantry formula – three parts visualization, one part tension, two parts anxiety, zero parts self-critical and four parts humor. This “recipe” will fire up in the cells and direct in the body a consistent and predictable type of movement.

Now change the mental/emotional formula to something quite different – one part visualization, three parts tension, four parts self-critical, five parts anxiety and zero parts humor. Again, this recipe will produce a very different swing, and a very different result.

The bottom line is that a quiet, peaceful, focused mind will allow our games to be in “flow,” both within our bodies and within a Universe that says a resounding yes to everything we truly think that we deserve.
