Even when we’re sick, when we are lying in bed with a cold and our noses are stuffy and congested, are we more focused on our misery and how we don’t like feeling sick or on how wonderful it will feel to be healthy and well? Either object of attention is going to deliver to us more of the same. Just as we cannot focus on sickness and health in the same moment in time, we cannot feel rotten about any aspect of our golf games and hope to see something we are going to like.

In every moment, each of us has the ability to find a thought that would feel better to us than the one before. Not the best feeling thought we’ve ever had, perhaps, but one that would give us a little bit of emotional relief. Yet most of us, in ignoring how our thoughts feel inside our bodies, remain stuck in the trappings of a mind that is on overdrive with endless chatter and noise. We “mind-less-ly” push aside the emotional mastery that is necessary for accessing states of peak performance, losing our connection with the deepest and most powerful essence of who we really are.

If we truly knew that we could take a thought and think it long enough and strong enough to create anything we wanted, there would never be a reason to live in doubt or fear again. Most of us don’t look at things this way, however, choosing instead to use unwanted conditions as the reason for our unhappiness and lack of success. The objects and situations we see around us – wanted or unwanted – come into our field of awareness only from repeated and habitual patterns of thought. Our repeated attention to anything is simply going to strengthen its energy and power, and sooner or later whatever we are focused upon is going to appear in manifested physical form.

Rebirth symbolizes the abstract and evolving nature of golf and life itself. Within each golf shot is the opportunity to reinvent both ourselves and our games, requiring nothing short of a total commitment to the rebirth of our thoughts, emotions, and beliefs.
